Das Gemälde ist ein bedeutendes, großformatiges Werk dieses Repräsentanten des norddeutschen Barock. Eine Seltenheit ist die Angabe einer Datierung und die voll ausgeschriebene Signatur, regelmäßig nur als Monogramm.

Matthias Scheits gilt als einer der bedeutendsten norddeutschen Zeichner und Maler des Barock.
Er war Schüler von Philipps Wouwermann in Holland, auch beeinflußt von Ostade und Teniers. Die meisten seiner Werke befinden sich heute in der Hamburger Kunsthalle (darunter 14 Ölgemälde).
Als Illustrator ist er durch die heute sogenannte Scheits'sche Bibel bekannt geworden, eine 1672 in Lüneburg gedruckte Bibel, für die er 152 Zeichnungen fertigte, die als Vorlage für die Kupferstiche gedient haben.

Das vorliegende Gemälde hat Scheits in seiner ihm typischen Art komponiert und ausgeführt. Nach niederländischer Art erfolgt die Anlage des Bildes und seine Ausführung setzt er in leuchtenden Farben um. Die vergleichsweise flüchtig gemalte Landschaftsstaffage dieses Sittenbildes orientiert sich dagegen mehr an italienischen Gewohnheiten, etwa eines Alessandro Magnasco.

Der originale Bildtitel - Der Zudringliche - ist überliefert durch eine eigenhändig betitelte Detail-Studie des Künstlers im Besitz eines Nachfahren von Scheits.

Scheits Matthias is one of the most important north German artist and painter of the Baroque.
He was a pupil of Philip Wouwermann in Holland, also influenced by Ostade and Teniers. Most of his works are now in the Hamburger Kunsthalle (including 14 oil paintings).
As an illustrator he has become known today by the so-called Scheits'sche Bible, a 1672 Bible printed in Luneburg, where he produced 152 drawings that served as a template for the engravings.

This painting Scheits composed and executed in his inimitable style. After Dutch type is the system of the image and uses it to his execution in bright colors. The relatively volatile landscape painted staffage this moral image contrast is based more on Italian habits, such as an Alessandro Magnasco.
