Der Künstler war zunächst Student der Berliner Akademie, dann 1862-63 Schüler von Couture in Paris, später von Ludwig Knaus in Berlin.
In Berlin beschickte er die Akademie-Ausstellungen mit Landschaftsmotiven aus Bayern Hessen, Tirol und Italien.
Größere Erfolge feierte er mit trefflichen Porträts (Zitat aus Th.-B.) und Genregemälden.

Das Gemälde ist außergewöhnlich dekorativ und qualitätvoll. Meisterhaft ist die Behandlung des Inkarnats, das ausgesprochen differenziert im Kolorit und der Behandlung des Lichts ausgeführt ist. Unverkennbar ist der Einfluss von Ludwig Knaus, der ebenso sorgfältig und detailliert arbeitete, dabei immer einen besonderen Gestus herausfordernd.
