Das Gemälde ist ein Beispiel für die Leichtigkeit der Strichführung und das hohe koloristische Können des Marinemalers Cornelius Wagner.
Der Fischerort Polperro, in dem das vorliegende Werk entstand, ist einer der stimmungsvollsten Orte Cornwalls und zog schon damals außer Touristen auch viele Künstler an.

Cornelius Wagner gehört der Düsseldorfer Malerschule an. Im Alter von 15 Jahren kam Wagner zur Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie (Studium bis 1895) als Schüler von Prof. Eugen Dücker. Er unternahm Fernreisen nach Westindien (1897) und nach Argentinien (1904). 1906 ließ er sich in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth nieder und blieb dort bis 1955 beheimatet. Wagner war ein Freund von Georg Wilhelm Degode und Max Clarenbach.

Seine Werke erwarben die Museen der Städte Düsseldorf, Köln, Koblenz und Oldham (England).

Cornelius Wagner is a member of the Düsseldorf School. At the age of 15 years, Wagner came to the Düsseldorf Art Academy (studied up to 1895) as a pupil of Prof. Eugen Dücker. He undertook long journeys to the West Indies (1897) and Argentina (1904). In 1906 he settled in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth and stayed there until 1955. Wagner was a friend of Wilhelm Degode und Max Clarenbach.

His work is in the collections of museums such as Dusseldorf, Cologne, Koblenz and Oldham (England).
