The work of Paul Madeline becomes steadily in recent years in the focus of admirers of post-Impressionist painting. The catalogue raisonnée is currently in progress and in particular its rare early works are to be assessed in a new art-historical context. Biography Paul Madeline was born in Paris in 1863. Student at the Beaux Arts in Paris, he was working in a publishing house in Paris to earn some money for living and painted urban landscapes in his spare time. In 1894, he discovers la Creuse and glare that produced this area on him. It encouraged him to visit it more frequently to paint his landscapes. The paintings that he draws firstly reveal him to critics then to the general public: we admire his subtle impressionism, the grace and delicacy with which he tames the wilderness of Creuse. Madeline forces the admiration by performing especially his paintings to acquire by them the obvious beauty.He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1894, 97 and 99. He was appointed permanent member of the Salon d'Automne, then swore in the Salon de la Nationale des Beaux Arts. This success allows him to live from 1902 thanks to his art. In 1908, he founded "La Société Moderne", which includes painters like Lebasque, Raffaëlli, Aman and Maurice Chabas. The gallery Devambez and Durand-Ruel invited them to their annual exhibitions. Towards the end of his career, Madeline introduced some characters in his landscapes, wearing regional costumes, especially from Brittany. He died at 57 years, in 1920. The Salon des Indépendants devotes him a retrospective in 1926. | |
